Unknown Territories – Works from the Matti Koivurinta Foundation art collection
13.2.2015 to 24.5.2015
ABOA VETUS & ARS NOVA
Museum of History and Contemporary Art
Turku, Finland

Unknown Territories is a journey into the land of dream images and utopias. The exhibition, presenting the Matti Koivurinta Foundation art collection, has an atmosphere that shifts from playful to serious. Strange visions can be encountered in the exhibition. Wavering reality, images that arise from the unconscious and dream worlds are all present in the works of the exhibition. Surrealism and fairy-tale creatures depict the fantastical, but some of the works are also about the tangible reality.

The earliest of the works on display are from the late 1920s and early 1930s, the newest from last year. The exhibition includes works from 23 artists: Hans-Christian Berg, Max Ernst, Rainer Fetting, Simo Hannula, Veikko Hirvimäki, IC-98, Alpo Jaakola, Ulla Jokisalo, Asger Jorn, Anish Kapoor, Hannu Karjalainen, Johanna Kiivaskoski, Veikko Laukkanen, Nikolai Lehto, André Masson, Viljo Mäkinen, Otto Mäkilä, Maritta Nurmi, Ulla Rantanen, Sulho Sipilä, Kain Tapper, Anna Tuori and Andy Warhol.

The Matti Koivurinta Foundation art collection contains works from the recent history of Finnish and Western art. The oldest works in the collection are from the late 19th Century, but the emphasis is on the time period after the middle 1950s and on the present day. The collection holds 650 works and is increased yearly with new acquisitions.

Tienviittoja: Taiteilija Maritta Nurmi lähti maailmalle
Yle Radio 1 (esitetty 1.11.2014, kuunneltavissa ulkomailla)

"Aina mä olen ufo, koska olen ulkomaalainen ja perheetön", kertoo Maritta Nurmi elämästään Vietnamissa. Millaista oli sopeutua miljoonakaupunki Hanoin arkeen? Ainakin hän on keksinyt keinon miten pääsee helpommin eroon paikallisten jatkuvista uteluista. Ennen taiteilijan uraa hän opiskeli Turussa biologiksi. Mikä sai vaihtamaan alaa lähes nelikymppisenä? Minna Korhonen kävi Suomenlinnan HIAP-taitelijaresidenssissä, jossa räiskyvä taitelija valmistautui Designmuseon keramiikkanäyttelyn avajaisiin.

"This high-standard exhibition selected by a jury of experts has inspired professionals in the field to offer their best work. The theme of Ceramics & Space is expressed in poetic works as art, sculpture, installations and studies of form and material. Many of the works address the history of ceramics and its forms of representation at the present time. The works also take up subjects of a socio-political nature, with the material serving as a mirror on society and an ironic statement on the setting in which we live. What motifs are valuable enough for decorating plates or pots? The works of the exhibition display both pure beauty and grotesque humour, and they provide an opportunity for contemplation and questioning."
